16.2.3 Roles: Profile Pictures & Galaxy Features

How admins disable profile-picture uploads and limit Galaxy (constellation) features using roles.

Admins can control who can upload profile pictures and which parts of Galaxy each role can use. These are configured under Settings → Roles → [select a role] → Features. Changes auto-save and take effect the next time the affected user logs in.

Two principles to remember

  • Roles can only restrict features — they can't grant beyond the license.
  • The default role has everything enabled.

The relevant role toggles

  • Profile Picture Upload — controls whether users on that role can upload a photo as their profile picture. Turning it off does not remove the generated-avatar or earned-badge options — only the photo upload. (Useful for schools with student-photo policies.)
  • Galaxy — the master switch for the entire Galaxy experience: the Galaxy screen, the chat Galaxy pill, and star earning. Turning this off hides all of Galaxy for that role.
  • Streak Display — hides the streak UI (flame / day count). Streaks are still recorded in the background; only the display is hidden. This is a "child" of the Galaxy toggle.
  • Badge Display — hides the badge UI and skips the badge-style onboarding step. Badges are still recorded in the background; only the display is hidden. Also a child of the Galaxy toggle.

The hierarchy to teach clearly

  • Turning off Galaxy automatically turns off Streak Display and Badge Display too.
  • Streak / Badge toggles are display-only restrictions, whereas Galaxy off removes the whole feature.

Defaults by license (context)

  • Students — Galaxy, streaks, badges, and photo upload are on by default.

Why it helps

These toggles let a school match Galaxy to its own policies — for example, hiding streaks for a particular group, or disabling student photo uploads — without turning the whole platform on or off.
