3.12 Branching a Conversation

How to branch a conversation from any completed AI reply to explore a different direction without losing your place.

From any completed AI response, you can branch the conversation. This creates a new conversation containing all the history up to and including that AI reply, and opens it in a new browser tab. The original conversation is untouched — great for exploring a different direction without losing your place.

How to branch

  • Hover over a finished AI message.
  • Click the branch icon ("Branch conversation from here").
  • A new tab opens at the branched conversation.

What the branch looks like

  • The branched conversation shows a "Branched from [original title]" marker, with a link back to the source.
  • Its title is prefixed with "Branch = ".
  • The original conversation is left exactly as it was.

Where it works

  • Available in both Chat and Studio.
  • Offered on AI (assistant) messages that have finished saving.
  • Not offered while a message is still streaming, and not on diagram-only messages.

Ways to use it

  • Try a different explanation or level of an answer without disturbing the original thread.
  • Explore a "what if" tangent, then come back to your main conversation via the link.
  • Create variations of a lesson idea from the same starting point.

Why it helps

Branching lets you experiment freely. You can chase a new idea in a separate tab, safe in the knowledge that your original conversation — and everything you built in it — stays intact.
